While on vacation last week, my daughter Elizabeth led me on a hike to a location called "Long Rocks", on the campus of Kanuga Episcopal Conference Center in Hendersonville, NC. I had asked her for a good location to film a little Tai Chi and she said this was just the spot! This enormous rock I am standing on in the video is very uneven! I am used to practicing Tai Chi on a nice flat studio floor @ Arts and Wellness of Edenton, so this was a brand new experience! The variable surface of the rock base forced me to truly slow down and listen to what was happening beneath my feet, and then adjust and respond gently with my body above. Tai Chi offers endless life application principles; one of which is “Softness overcomes Hardness”. So in this experience of working with constant change underfoot, I believe we can apply this to our lives as well! We have the moment by moment opportunity to slow down and listen to the current landscape, soften and adapt ourselves to that change, and then accept and embrace the journey! Instead of fighting against the ups and downs, ins and outs of life change, we can notice and work with the shifts. Then, our experiences can be more of an adventure that we can enjoy! Thank God life is not about performance, but of realizing and experiencing each moment, and allowing the Teacher and Wisdom within to guide and transform us.
The sequence shown in this video is the most popular form of Tai Chi worldwide, called the 24 Movement Short Form Style. It may seem very complicated to try to learn, but Tai Chi is all about simplicity and ease! At "AWE" we teach the very basics of Tai Chi principles and practice, which not only support your physical body's health and wellness but also apply to your mindset and approach to life! The lifestyle we live is directed by what we believe and the direction our decisions carry us towards. So, what better way to approach wholistic wellness than to utilize a practice that invites us to ask questions like, "How am I moving through my day, both physically and mentally?", "Why am I so tense in my body and mind?", "How can I bring a little more ease and joy into my daily experience?"
I am a young student of Tai Chi, but I simply adore this ancient practice. It brings me peace and meaning to my days. I am so grateful to what it brings to my growing awareness of myself and all of creation.
