A huge mess of twisted and knotted yoga straps. That's what I met when I opened the dryer door this morning. Sixteen studio straps had managed to find the most complicated way to entertain themselves during the drying time. I almost felt their laughter, as I pulled the whole mess out and gave one fruitless tug at the bundle, as if by magic they would fall loosely apart. Not surprisingly, with that effort the knots only became more determined and my challenge more evident!
Often, God teaches me things through moments and images. My "yoga strap revelation" goes something like this. We can easily look at ourselves and see nothing but a big mess of knotted and stubborn yoga straps (habits, behaviors, ways of thinking and believing), that we desperately want to untangle. What's worse is that we want to tackle that whole bundle, all at once. We want freedom and relief from it all right now. We want it to be fast and painless, like pulling out a thorn. What I believe real life with God looks like, is a "strap by strap" process. By sitting down and taking hold of the end of ONE "strap", gently unwinding and unthreading it through the maze, that one piece of the tangled puzzle gets freed. The amazing thing to discover and remember is the effect that the one strap has on the whole. The effort actually becomes easier along the way. "Strap by strap", growing freedom is experienced and enjoyed, way before the job is completed.
I believe there are so many who are stuck and overwhelmed as they stare at their knotted pile of "straps". I want to encourage you today that you don't have to tackle the whole mess at once! You don't have to find freedom all in one day! And you don't have to walk through the task alone, in fact that would be quite impossible! I know the One who created you. He is not standing in judgement, but asking you to sit down with Him and simply take hold with Him, on the end of one "strap". He desires to travel the path with you into freedom. One piece at a time. Freedom from lies that keep you from believing that you are loved and valuable. Freedom from habits and behaviors that are sourced within those same lies. Freedom from just plain weariness of living life feeling alone.
Jesus says, "Are you tired? Worn out? Come to me. Get away with me and you'll recover your life. I'll show you how to take a real rest."
What does that look like practically for you? Well, I don't know. We all have our own knotted mess of "straps", built up over a lifetime's drying cycle. What I do know is that Jesus is utterly faithful, and will never for a moment leave your side. I also know that there will be people along your path to encourage you, to say, "good job", "keep going"! Patti and I are two of those people. We welcome you into our door at "AWE" and send you out with a big "Hooray!". You are on your path and not alone.
Where do you begin? Sit down right where you are, with the One who is already holding you.
